iPhone 16 Pro vs iPhone 16: Which iPhone should you buy?

Both the iPhone 16 and the iPhone 16 Pro were launched on 20 September 2024 in India. Both the models have a good price difference, as the iPhone 16 is priced at ₹79900 while the Pro model is priced at ₹119900. Most of the features are similar, but there are also some unique features that do not come with the iPhone 16, so let’s find out the difference between the iPhone 16 Pro and the iPhone 16 in this blog post.

iPhone 16 Pro vs iPhone 16 Design

Both the iPhone 16 and 16 Pro are good options for a compact phone. Meanwhile, the Pro model is more advanced and also larger and heavier than the iPhone 16. However, the design is pretty and much similar, but the Pro model has a titanium frame and the iPhone 16 has an aluminium frame. On the back, the camera module also looks different. The iPhone 16 comes with five colour options, while the Pro model offers four colour options.

iPhone 16 Pro vs iPhone 16 Display, Features

The iPhone 16 Pro is taller because it has a 0.2-inch bump in screen size this year. It has a 6.3-inch LTPO OLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate, while the iPhone 16 has a 6.1-inch OLED display with just a 60Hz refresh rate. The difference in refresh rate means that swiping and scrolling are much smoother on the pro model, and with this LPTO technology, the pro can dial its refresh rate down low while idling to save energy. You don’t get an always on display on the iPhone 16, which you do get on the iPhone 16 Pro.

The iPhone 16 Pro’s bezels are thinner as well, but on the other side, you have the same sharpness and excellent brightness on both models and support for HDR 10 Plus and Dolby Vision video. When it comes to audio, the iPhone 16 stereo speaker setup is insanely louder than the Pro model, but both phones have excellent sound quality. The iPhone 16 supports USB Type C, which supports USB 2, while the PRO model supports USB 3 for up to 20x faster transfers. The storage options are the same for either phone except that the pro model has the option to come with a whole terabyte on board.

iPhone 16 Pro vs iPhone 16 Chipset, Hardware

The iPhone 16 is packed with the A18, while the Pro model has an A18 Pro chip. The Pro uses a slightly more powerful one, the A18 Pro, instead of the A18, and both phones have 8 gigs of RAM. When it comes to performance, the iPhone 16 Pro has the upper hand, but the difference is small, to the tune of around 5% better CPU scores and up to 15% better graphic scores outside of benchmarks.

Where the two chipsets differ seems to be power consumption. The two phones have about the same battery capacity, but the iPhone 16 earned a longer battery life score in our tests. The two phones clearly have different modems too, so even call times were different. The charging speed is the same between the two iPhones. Overall charging speed difference in our testing was negligible.

iPhone 16 Pro vs iPhone 16 Camera

Coming on the cameras, the iPhone 16 has a 48MP main camera and a 12MP ultrawide camera with autofocus. The iPhone 16 Pro has a 48MP main camera with a larger sensor, a 12MP 5X Telephoto zoom, and a 48MP ultrawide camera with autofocus. The pro brings extra features that you don’t get on the vanilla model, like the JPEG XL Steels format, 4K slow-motion captures at 120 fps, and pro-resolution recording.

On both phones, the default 12MP daylight photos from the main camera and ultra-wide cameras might as well have been taken on the same device; they are similar in terms of dynamic range, colour detail, and overall look. With a dedicated telephoto camera, the 16 Pro has an advantage when it comes to zoom; the non-pro misuses a digital crop to achieve this magnification. The same trend can be found when comparing the phones in low light. The main camera and ultra-wide photos are essentially the same, but the 5X zoom of the iPhone 16 Pro telephotos does really well in the dark.

The iPhone 16 and the iPhone 16 Pro have the same 12 MP selfie camera, and selfies look identical on both models. With the pro model, you can shoot 4K at 120 fps slow-motion from this main camera, and the vanilla model doesn’t have that feature. In daylight, the 4K video quality is slightly softer from the iPhone 16 than it is from the Pro. The vanilla model is still great.

Final Words

Overall, the vanilla iPhone 16 vs. the iPhone 16 Pro. The iPhone 16 is lighter and more compact, and its battery life is better. This model is less expensive while it gives you largely the same user experience. The iPhone 16 Pro, on the other hand, has the titanium frame and a larger high refresh rate display. The chip set is slightly more powerful, and the cameras are more versatile thanks to the dedicated telephoto, as you get additional Pro camera options too. So if you need a more serious camera experience or if you really want a smoother display, you go with the iPhone 16 Pro. Otherwise, the iPhone 16 still holds its own, and it can save you some cash.
